Spring 2013 Season Opener – 05 March

It’s that time once again.  First swallows are back, Turkey Vultures are banking in the thermals, and Rufus Hummingbirds are zipping around.  Ospreys can’t be too far behind.

While i’m not ready for daily updates quite yet, i thought i’d post the best radar images to date.   The birds are headed north.

From RTX the base velocity image from last night is quite spectacular.  It clearly shows south to north directionality.  The birds are taking advantage of the clear skies and southerly flows.  A look at the base reflectivity shows that the density is still quite low as is to be expected.  But still — it game on!
